Archive for May 2017The Easy Way to Save Cash in RockfordPosted May 30, 2017 3:13 AMThe hottest Illinois news story may be different every day, but there's one topic that seems to come up over and over again – the price of gas in Rockford. If you feel like most of your paycheck goes into your gas tank, this post is for you. Here are several basic things people in Rockford can do to greatly reduce their gas consumption, save money, and help the environment. You can really improve your fuel economy by how you drive – but first, here's a review of things you can do for your vehicle that'll save gas no matter how you drive. Another important item is to keep your air filter clean. An air filter all clogged up with dirt and bugs doesn't let enough clean air through to efficiently burn fuel. Using a dirty air filter will cost you almost 2 miles per gallon/.85 km per liter in reduced fuel economy. And worn spark plugs can cost about the same. A spark plug can fire as many as 3,000,000 times for every 1,000 miles/1,600 km driven. Check the vehicle owner's manual for replacement recommendations. One item Rockford residents seldom think about is their gas cap. A worn, loose or missing gas cap can cost another 2 miles per gallon/.85 km per liter. Adding up all of these worn, missing or sub-par items leads to a total of almost 11.4 miles per gallon/4.85 km per liter in reduced fuel economy! And with current gas prices in the Rockford area, the cost really adds up. Taking care of these simple maintenance items will save Rockford drivers at the pump. Now most vehicles aren't missing on all of these items, but think about which ones might affect you right now! And don't forget tune-ups, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid, fuel system cleaning, wheels out of alignment, PCV valve, fuel filter and other services spelled out in your owner's manual. TJ's Auto Center Inc. Illinois: What Is the Risk of High Oil Change Intervals?Posted May 23, 2017 6:26 AMIllinois residents may have heard that vehicles don't need their oil changed as often as they used to. That's true. But it's not the whole story. When a vehicle only makes trips under four miles/six kilometers, or under 10 miles/16 kilometers in freezing conditions, the engine doesn't get warm enough for condensation in the oil to evaporate. The result? You get oil sludge build-up. If your driving patterns are the same as any of the conditions that count as severe, you should be changing your oil more frequently under the severe conditions schedule. When it comes to oil changes, a little information can go a long way to helping people save money and extend the life of their vehicles. Stay safe, and stay on the road. TJ's Auto Center Inc.

Stay Safe in Rockford by Putting Your Cell Phone on ICEPosted May 16, 2017 1:07 AMWe don't want to think about it, but each Rockford resident who drives or rides in a vehicle is potentially an accident victim. In the worst-case scenario, those people are unconscious and unable to communicate with Illinois rescue workers. Rescue workers and Rockford police are well aware of this difficulty, even if the rest of us don't stop to think about it. They can all recount stories of searching through glove compartments, pockets, wallets, purses and cell phone directories for a person's name and for contact information for someone who can help them get the person the medical care they need. This contact information is critical in an accident because Rockford medical workers need to know about allergies and potential drug interactions. Also, in Illinois, some medical treatments can't be provided without authorization or consent, and there can be insurance and billing issues if the person's medical care is not properly arranged. ICE provides a solution for these concerns. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency and is a way for others to quickly identify emergency contacts in your cell phone. Bob Brotchie, a paramedic from Cambridge, England, developed the idea for ICE in 2005. It soon spread around the globe. The system is simple, affordable and highly functional. Rockford rescue workers can tell you that they can't always find purses and wallets at the scene of an accident. But these days, almost no one in Illinois goes anywhere without their phone. To add ICE to your phone, simply put ICE in front of the names of those people who should be contacted in case you are in an emergency. For example, “ICE-Dad,” or “Ice-Deborah,” or “ICE-Dr. Mitchell.” Rockford rescuers can quickly identify and access this information, saving valuable time. The only thing Rockford drivers have to do after that is to keep their contacts current. Every time you change the batteries in your smoke alarm, it is a good idea to double-check your phone and make sure your ICE cell phone numbers are up-to-date. Of course, we'd rather avoid an accident in the first place. It's good advice to keep up with preventive maintenance (we can help you with that at TJ's Auto Center Inc. in Rockford) and practice good car care and driving habits. Those can go a long way to keeping you safe on the road. Planning for the unthinkable helps your rescuers find the information they need quickly. Let's put the world on ICE. TJ's Auto Center Inc.

Your vehicle alternator doesn't get enough credit. Though your battery gets your engine started, after that – it's all about the alternator. Driving around Rockford is a lot of work for your alternator, and as upgrades such as heated steering wheels, cooled seats, stability control and lane departure warning become more common, it will have to work even harder. Eventually this workhorse just wears out. When it does you have no choice but to order an alternator replacement because your vehicle won't run without one. TJ's Auto Center Inc. Serpentine Belt Service at TJ's Auto Center Inc. in RockfordPosted May 2, 2017 9:09 AMIf you've ever heard a squealing sound under your vehicle hood, chances are it was your serpentine belt. More importantly, the belt powers the alternator. The alternator creates electricity that's used by your vehicle's electrical systems and also charges the battery. Without the alternator, the battery will go dead after a short distance. TJ's Auto Center Inc. | ||
